M. Martin is becoming a go-to label for women craving a serene, unencumbered style; think slip dressing, head-to-toe knits, relaxed suiting, and raw denim. It’s up there with The Row and classic Céline in that it puts forth elevated staples that require a zoomed-in look to reveal the magic in the details. For Pre-Fall, that was truer than ever for designers Jennifer Noyes and Alex Gilbert—they even introduced a core collection of wardrobe essentials that will be available every season. Included in the no-brainer offering were perfect roll-neck sweaters, classic pajamas (an M. Martin signature), ribbed-knit underpinnings, and soft blazers.

Much of the newness came in the fabrications. There was a shimmery black and blue coat that looked like duchesse satin but was actually a waterproof utility material. Consider it the evening alternative to a gabardine trench. Noyes and Gilbert also proposed one of the best twists on a tuxedo we’ve seen lately. A lightweight, double-breasted jacket was thin enough to tuck into matching cigarette trousers, so the result almost resembled a jumpsuit. “We wanted to create an alternative to a completely tailored jacket,” Gilbert said. The Spring ’17 runways were brimming with square, oversize pantsuits, but M. Martin’s would make a much wiser (and chicer) investment.
